Fr Raymond E Brown Site

I found on the Catholic Bibles Blog website an article on a new website with some of the works of Fr. Raymond E Brown, S.S. Fr. Brown was one of the leading biblical scholars of the last century, twice a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, president of the Catholic Biblical Association, the Society of Biblical Literature, and the Society of New Testament Studies, as well as professor emeritus at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He was a leading proponent of the historical-critical method of studying the Bible. I’ve read through the pdf of The Problem of the Virginal Conception of Jesus which was originally published in Theological Studies in 1972 and would recommend it. Fr. Brown gives a good overview of the evidence for and against the belief in the virginal birth of Our Lord from then current scholarship in Scriptures and other sources. In my opinion we do ourselves a favor in questioning even our core assumptions of the Faith. In doing so we gain a deeper understanding of why we believe what we do and the sources that underlie those beliefs. And by being able to appeal to a variety of sources we may be able to provide acceptable evidence to those who disbelieve.
