I really enjoyed giving the presentation this past Sunday on Catholic Versions of English Scriptures. Below are listed some of the resources that I mentioned or had meant to mention.
Word of the Lord – 7 Essential Principles for Catholic Scripture Study (Purchase from Aquinas and More)
This was the book that I mentioned at the beginning of my talk. It’s a very good introduction that covers everything from inspiration, inerrancy, the canon, and interpretation. Definitely worth having as an overview.
Biblical Interpretation in Crisis by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (online)
Then Cardinal Ratzinger gave this talk as the Erasmus Lecture in 1988. He covers some of the problems in modern exegesis involving the Historical Critical method and also gives his hopes for a way forward. Mentioned in the beginning of the article is A Short Tale of the Antichrist” by Vladimir Soloviev (“online). War, Progress, and the End of History by Vladimir Soloviev ( Internet Archive ) “A Short Tale of the Antichrist” is included beginning on page 180. The link has various formats including online, pdf and Kindle.
Interpretation of the Bible in the Church by Pontifical Biblical Commission ( online, pdf)
Covers modern, traditional, and human scientific methods of interpreting Scriptures. Gives a good summary of the different branches of those methods, hermeneutics, and the role of the Bible in the life of the Church. This document would be a great place to start in learning different methods of exegesis and the Catholic way of exegesis.
Documents from the Catholic Biblical Federation’s Congress on the 40th anniversary of the promulgation of Dei Verbum.
St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology
Information on their parish based Scripture studies as well as online studies. Their resource library has a wealth of links and information.
Great resource for current news on new Catholic Bible releases and news.
