Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching and Catholic Social Teaching in Scripture

Objectives

  • Recognize that the Church has always stood for charity and justice
    • Social teachings in Scripture
    • Church’s history of social concern
    • Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy
  • Dominican connection to Catholic Social Teaching
    • St. Dominic’s love of Truth and the salvation of souls
    • Life of a Dominican is “transformed in prayer… to lead other souls to Christ”
    • Laity realize that Catholic Social Justice is a natural overflow of who we are first as Catholics and also as Dominicans that it has been modeled by out saints

Objectives

  • Describe the social nature of the human person (CCC nos. 1878-1889, 1929)

  • Describe the relationship between the respect for the person and Catholic Social Teaching (CCC 1700, 1869, 1929-1933, 2259-2283)

  • Identify the four principles of CST

  • Identify the seven themes of CST

  • Dominican connection to CST

    • Laity realize that social justice is a natural overflow of who we are first as Catholics

    • Connection of the Dominican Laity Promise as stated in the Rule and Directory for Lay Dominicans of the Province of St. Martin de Porres, 2016

  • Read Centesimus Annus at your own pace for a discussion in December (Meeting 4),considering the 4 principles and 7 themes of Catholic Social Doctrine.  Each person come up with 5 key ideas/quotes and 3 questions for discussion
